When Your Italian Family Tree Ends With a Foundling

When Your Italian Family Tree Ends With a Foundling

You may know the American side of your Italian family almost by heart. You may know the street where your great-grandparents lived, the church where they were married, the names of their children, the cemetery where they were buried. Perhaps you have searched census records, naturalization papers, passenger lists, marriage certificates, church registers, and old family photographs. For years, you may have been trying to discover the Italian town your family left behind.
Then, one day, you finally find it.
You locate the comune in Italy. You find the birth record of your great-grandfather or great-grandmother. You recognize the name that has appeared on American documents for generations.
And then you read the record more carefully.
There is the date of birth.
There is the child's name.
But where the parents should be, there is nothing.
Perhaps the record says:
figlio di ignoti.
Child of unknown parents.
For an Italian-American descendant, those words can feel like a door suddenly closing.
You thought you had reached the beginning of your family story.
Instead, you have reached a mystery.
But the mystery may not be the end of the genealogy.
It may be the place where the genealogy changes direction.

The Ancestor Behind the Missing Names

If you encounter an Italian record like this, you may also find words such as esposto, proietto, or trovatello. Their use varied according to region, institution, and historical period. They are often associated with children who had been abandoned, surrendered, or placed under institutional care, but they should not automatically be treated as exact synonyms.
The expression figlio di ignoti is also important. It means that the child's parents were not identified in that record. By itself, it does not prove that the child had been placed through a ruota degli esposti, or even that the child had passed through a foundling institution.
That distinction matters.
A child whose parents were not identified was not necessarily an orphan. A mother could still be alive. A father could still be alive. Relatives might even have known exactly who the parents were.
What disappeared from the official record was the identity of the parents.
There were many circumstances that could lead a child to be surrendered or placed in institutional care. Poverty could make another mouth impossible to feed. A pregnancy outside marriage could bring severe social consequences. A young servant might become pregnant by a man who refused to recognize the child. A relationship opposed by a family might result in a pregnancy that could not be publicly acknowledged.
Sometimes the circumstances were recorded.
Often they were not.
For the descendant searching more than a century later, that silence can be painful. But it is important not to fill the silence with a story that the records do not support.
The documents may tell us what happened to the child.
They may never tell us why.

The Italian Institutions That Received Abandoned Children

If your ancestor was recorded as an esposto or under another term associated with abandoned children, the next question is not simply, “Who were the parents?”
It is also:
“Where was this child received?”
Italy had numerous institutions that cared for abandoned or unsupported children. Some were known as brefotrofi. Others were connected with hospitals, charitable foundations, religious institutions, or other organizations responsible for children without known family support.
Their organization and procedures varied considerably from one city to another and changed over time.
Florence had the famous Spedale degli Innocenti. Naples had the Real Casa Santa dell'Annunziata. Other cities maintained their own institutions, registers, procedures, and terminology.
This regional difference is crucial for an Italian-American genealogist.
There was no single Italian system that operated in exactly the same way everywhere.
The institution that received your ancestor may contain the clue that an ordinary civil record does not.

The Wheel at the Door

In some Italian cities and during particular periods, infants could be left through a ruota degli esposti, the foundling wheel.
The image is difficult to forget.
A woman arrives carrying a newborn.
She may have come at night because she did not want to be recognized.
She places the baby inside the revolving compartment, turns the mechanism, and rings the bell.
Inside the institution, someone hears it.
An attendant comes.
The child is taken in.
The woman leaves.
That is a historical reconstruction of how the wheel could function where such a system was operating. It should not be imagined as the procedure used everywhere in Italy or throughout the entire period in which abandoned children were received.
We cannot know what every mother felt at that moment.
Some may have been desperate. Some frightened. Some may have been under intense pressure from relatives or social circumstances. Some may have believed that the institution offered the child a better chance of survival than she could provide herself.
The wheel was not merely a symbol of abandonment. In places and periods where it operated, it was part of a system intended to receive infants without requiring the person delivering them to reveal her identity.
That baby might then enter a completely different life.
And one day, perhaps decades later, that child might become your Italian-American ancestor.

The Small Object Someone Left Behind

There is another part of these records that can be especially moving to genealogists.
Sometimes the person leaving a baby placed an object beside the child as a segno di riconoscimento — a sign of recognition.
It might have been a medal.
A rosary.
A ribbon.
A photograph.
A piece of clothing.
A fragment of a religious image.
A small piece of cloth.
Sometimes an object could be divided, with one part remaining with the child and another retained by the mother or relative.
The intention was simple.
If circumstances changed, the object might help establish the child's identity.
Imagine that possibility from the perspective of an Italian-American descendant today.
An object that appeared insignificant at the time might have been the last physical connection between a mother and her child.
More than a century later, a genealogist may discover that an institution carefully recorded such an object.
A tiny medal.
A fragment of cloth.
A few words in an old register.
A detail that survived when almost everything else disappeared.

The Record That Gave the Child a New Beginning

Once the infant was received, someone had to create an official record.
Depending on the place and period, officials might record the date and time of arrival, the child's sex, clothing, physical characteristics, and objects found with the infant. If the child had not already been baptized, a baptism might take place according to the practices of the institution or parish.
The child also needed a recorded name.
Sometimes a name may already have been indicated by the person who left the child. In other cases, a name was chosen or assigned by those responsible for the child's registration and care.
The surname could likewise be assigned by an institution or by the authorities responsible for registration, depending on local practice and historical period.
Some institutions also recorded foster care, transfers, later recognition, and departure.
For a genealogist, these records can be remarkable.
The civil birth record may tell you that a child existed.
An institutional record may reveal what happened next.
That is why the discovery of figlio di ignoti should not end the search.
It should change the search.

The Surname That Followed the Child Across the Atlantic

A child whose parentage was unknown still needed a recorded identity.
Naming practices varied greatly from one place and period to another. Some surnames became historically associated with children who had been abandoned or whose parents were unknown.
Esposito is perhaps the best-known example to many Americans, particularly because of its historical association with southern Italy. Proietti is another surname historically associated with foundlings in parts of central Italy. Innocenti has a strong historical connection with Florence and the Spedale degli Innocenti. Trovato and related forms also have regional associations with found or abandoned children.
But there is an essential rule for anyone doing genealogy:
A surname is not proof of abandonment.
An Esposito was not necessarily a foundling.
An Innocenti was not necessarily an abandoned child.
A Proietti was not automatically a figlio di ignoti.
A Trovato does not, by itself, establish the circumstances of a person's birth.
Over generations, these names became hereditary surnames carried by families whose histories were not necessarily connected with abandonment.
The document matters more than the surname.

The Myth of the Famous Italian Name

You may also encounter the claim that abandoned children were routinely given the surnames of famous singers, artists, or celebrated Italians.
The historical picture is much more complicated.
Different institutions used different naming practices. Names could refer to religion, places, institutions, nature, objects, occupations, dates, circumstances, auspicious ideas, or local traditions. Some names were deliberately invented.
In some situations, authorities also had reasons to avoid giving a child a surname that would immediately reveal the circumstances surrounding the child's abandonment.
There was therefore no universal Italian list of surnames used for foundlings.
The useful genealogical question is not:
“What was the foundling surname in Italy?”
It is:
“What naming practice was used in this particular place, at this particular time?”
That question can lead you toward the archive that holds the answer.

When Your American Family Tree Reaches a Wall

This is where the experience becomes painfully familiar.
Perhaps your great-grandfather was born in Italy around 1880.
Family tradition says he came from Campania, Calabria, Sicily, Lazio, Tuscany, Veneto, or another part of Italy.
You have his American marriage record.
You have found him in a census.
You may have located his naturalization papers.
Perhaps you even found the passenger record that brought him across the Atlantic.
You know the name he used in America.
You know the names of his children.
You may know where he worked, where he worshipped, and where he was buried.
Then you find the Italian record.
And there it is:
His name.
His birth date.
No father.
No mother.
Only figlio di ignoti.
For a family that has spent generations believing that somewhere in Italy there must be a father, a grandfather, a village, and a complete family line, this discovery can feel devastating.
But it is not necessarily a dead end.
It is an instruction to look somewhere else.
And the exact year and city matter. Around 1880, some Italian cities had already closed their traditional foundling wheels, while other institutions or alternative procedures for receiving abandoned children continued. The history of the ruota was not uniform across Italy.
So if your ancestor was born around this time, do not assume that a foundling wheel was involved simply because the record describes the child as an esposto or gives the parents as unknown.
Find out what system operated in that particular city in that particular year.

When the Research Has to Change Direction

Once you encounter evidence that your ancestor may have been an esposto or another type of abandoned or institutionally cared-for child, stop searching only for the parents.
Search for the institution.
Search the parish.
Search the municipal records.
Search the provincial Archivio di Stato.
Find out whether the city had a brefotrofio, hospital, charitable institution, religious foundation, or another organization responsible for abandoned children at the time.
Look for admission registers.
Look for baptismal records.
Look for foster-care records.
Look for transfers and discharges.
Look for later recognition.
Useful terms include esposto, esposta, proietto, proietta, trovatello, trovatella, figlio di ignoti, figlia di ignoti, and genitori ignoti.
But do not assume that these words meant exactly the same thing everywhere. Their meaning and use could change according to region, institution, and period.
That is one reason local archival research matters so much.

The American Records May Hold the Missing Clue

For an Italian-American family, the search should move in both directions across the Atlantic.
An Italian record may reveal something missing from an American document.
But the American record may also contain a clue that helps interpret the Italian one.
A naturalization document may give a birthplace.
A marriage record may provide an approximate age.
A death certificate may name an Italian town.
A church record may preserve a name or date that was altered elsewhere.
A World War I draft registration may contain another version of an immigrant's birthplace or name.
An obituary may mention relatives.
A cemetery inscription may preserve a spelling that disappeared from official records.
A family Bible may contain the only surviving version of an old name.
But American records can contain mistakes too.
Giovanni might appear as John.
Giuseppe might appear as Joseph.
Francesco might appear as Frank.
An Italian village may be written incorrectly.
A birth year may change from one document to another.
That is why Italian and American records should be compared rather than treated as separate stories.
Sometimes one side of the Atlantic explains what the other side left unclear.

The Baby Who Became an Italian-American Ancestor

Eventually, the genealogy can take you beyond the missing parents.
You begin to see the child.
Someone carried that baby into an institution.
Someone received the infant.
Someone recorded the arrival.
Someone may have baptized the child.
Someone became a foster mother or caregiver.
Someone fed the baby.
Someone taught the child to speak, work, pray, and survive.
The child grew up.
Perhaps he married.
Perhaps she married.
Perhaps that person eventually boarded a ship for America.
Maybe the destination was New York Harbor.
Maybe Boston.
Philadelphia.
New Orleans.
Or another American community where Italian immigrants built new lives.
The child whose parentage was unknown in the records became someone's husband or wife.
Someone's father or mother.
Someone's grandfather or grandmother.
And eventually, that person became your ancestor.

What If the Parents Are Never Found?

This may be the hardest part for a genealogist to accept.
You may discover the institution.
You may find the admission record.
You may identify the baptism.
You may learn the name of the foster mother.
You may even find a description of the clothing or object left with the infant.
And still, the biological parents may remain unknown.
Records may have been lost.
Archives may be incomplete.
A mother may never have returned.
A father may never have been identified.
Some stories simply did not survive.
That does not mean the research failed.
Genealogy is not always the recovery of every name.
Sometimes it is the reconstruction of a life from the fragments that remain.

The Person Behind the Record

After more than three decades of contact with Italian families and their descendants, I have learned that an ancestor can look very different once we understand the circumstances surrounding the beginning of that life.
Before the discovery, the person may have been little more than a name on a family tree.
Afterward, that name becomes a child.
A child whose beginning may remain partly hidden from us.
Perhaps a woman held that baby for the last time before leaving the child at an institution.
Perhaps she was frightened.
Perhaps she was desperate.
Perhaps she believed she had no other choice.
But unless the documents tell us, we should not turn possibility into fact.
There is dignity in allowing a mystery to remain a mystery while still telling the truth about the life that followed.

The Name That Crossed the Ocean

A surname assigned to an abandoned child in Italy could eventually become the name carried by an entire Italian-American family.
It might appear on a marriage certificate in New York, a gravestone in Pennsylvania, a baptismal record in an Italian-American parish, a family photograph in Massachusetts, or a World War I registration card.
Decades later, it may appear again on a computer screen in the hands of a descendant searching for the beginning of the family.
There is something remarkable in that journey.
A name assigned when a child's parentage was unknown may become the very name that allows later generations to find that child again.
Not the parents, perhaps.
Not every missing answer.
But the person.

The Family Tree Does Not End With a Foundling

If your Italian family tree ends with an ancestor recorded as an esposto, figlio di ignoti, or another designation indicating unknown or unrecorded parentage, do not assume that the blank space means there is nothing left to discover.
There may be another archive.
Another parish register.
Another institutional record.
Another American document.
Another spelling of the same name.
Another clue hidden in a place you had never thought to search.
Begin with the child.
Find where the child was born.
Find where the child was received.
Find who cared for the child.
Find the name that was recorded.
Find out how that name was assigned and what local practice lay behind it.
Follow that person through adulthood, marriage, children, work, migration, and eventually the journey to America.
Then follow the descendants.
Because genealogy is more than a collection of names and dates.
It is an attempt to recover the human life behind them.
Your ancestor may have left Italy without knowing who his parents were.
She may have died without ever knowing where she came from.
And yet, generations later, you are looking for her.
You have crossed an ocean too, although not in the way she did.
She crossed it physically.
You are crossing it through records, photographs, names, places, and questions.
You may never discover the names that disappeared at the beginning of her life.
But you can still discover the woman she became.
You can still discover the man he became.
You can still discover the family they created.
And you can still tell the story of the life that came after the silence.
Sometimes an Italian-American family tree does not end with a foundling.
Sometimes that is where the search finally becomes personal.

Author’s Note

After more than three decades of living alongside Italian families and their descendants, listening to their stories and accompanying people in the search for the names, villages, and lives left behind in Italy, I have learned that genealogy is rarely as simple as a name on a document might suggest.

I have met descendants who carried a surname for generations without knowing how it entered their family. I have also seen how easily a possibility can become a certainty when a researcher encounters a word such as esposto or figlio di ignoti. That is why I believe these records deserve particular care.

An esposto was not necessarily an orphan, and figlio di ignoti simply indicates that the parents were not identified in that particular record. Neither expression, by itself, tells us exactly why a child was surrendered, whether a ruota degli esposti was involved, or what happened to the parents.

The same caution applies to surnames. Names such as Esposito, Proietti, Innocenti, and Trovato have historical associations with abandoned or unidentified children in particular regions and periods, but a surname alone cannot prove that an ancestor was a foundling. The documents must establish that connection.

I have included these distinctions because I know the feeling that comes when a descendant finally discovers a document that seems to explain a family mystery. There is a natural desire to complete the story immediately. But after so many years of contact with Italian-descendant families, I have learned that the most responsible genealogy is sometimes the one that admits what we do not know.

When I look at these old records, however, I do not see only a missing father or mother. I see a child whose life continued after that difficult beginning. Someone received that child. Someone gave the child a name. Someone cared for the child. Perhaps that child eventually crossed the Atlantic and became part of an Italian-American family whose descendants, generations later, would begin searching for the very person who had once seemed almost impossible to find.

That is why I believe this kind of research deserves more than curiosity. It deserves patience, respect, and sensitivity. We may never recover the names of the parents. But we can often recover something else: the life that followed, the family that person created, and the generations that came after.

For me, that is one of the deepest meanings of genealogy. Sometimes we cannot recover the beginning of a life. But we can still make sure that the life itself is not forgotten.
